I'm having sometimes weird artifacts on one of my monitors (the DVI monitor, the VGA is fine) with my new hardware (Intel IGP on my Haswell mobo).
For the moment, let's describe it as purple stripes where there should be a white plain and black squares that move/dissapear when scrolling.
The effect is not unlike the purple stripes in this issue
Overall it is suggested to install the Intel third-party video drivers
I thought I would follow the official instructions, because there is now an official automated installer for Ubuntu.
Following the instructions, I:

Following this post I list the partial installed packages:
ls -l /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
which should be empty, but is not. It only contains download.01.org packages so I remove them:
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*
and run
apt-get update
but I get again:

So Icleaned partial dir again and removed the newly added software source from sources.list. I ran apt-get update, and added keys again

Just tried running it again and it installed fine. Now to see if the problem doesn't pop up again. I have seen the effect again, but only in a very small way compared to before. Maybe it will return at "full strength".
Until now I still have seen the problem a lot less than originally. I haven't seen it yet today.
The problem is back.
Maybe it is a video memory problem and it will help to increase the allocted video memory? I checked the BIOS for video settings and find to my surprise that the problem (the purple artefacts) are also visible in the BIOS/UEFI.
The integrated video memory was already set to 320M (the maximum). Also the setting DMVT was set to MAX.
The monitor is connected to my desktop by DVI. I tried to connect my laptop to the VGA port of the monitor. The same problem is visible. Is it the monitor? The monitor is a (slightly dated) Samsung Syncmaster 245b plus.
Was jiggling the VGA cable when plugged into my laptop (for testing). Then the problem disappeared. Unplugged VGA and switched the monitor back to DVI, still gone.
After the handywork the last try, the problem came back the next day. Today I uplugged the VGA (only the DVI is now plugged in). It looks good for the first 10 mins. About 5 hours later it came back, although the VGA cable was still detached. This time I just picked up the monitor and yes, it disappeared again. Unfortunately it came back after some minutes. The DVI is not loose. It might be dust in the monitor? And yes, at one point I tapped the monitor ever so slightly on the top and it went away. And came back after a minute or so. It might also be some loose internal wiring.
